Understanding the 4Cs of Diamonds

Introduction

When shopping for a diamond, understanding the 4Cs is essential. These four characteristics—Cut, Clarity, Colour, and Carat—are the universal standard for assessing diamond quality.

Cut: The Most Important C

The cut of a diamond refers to how well the stone has been shaped and faceted. A well-cut diamond will reflect light beautifully, creating that coveted sparkle. Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.

Clarity: The Purity Factor

Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes. Most diamonds have some imperfections, but many are invisible to the naked eye.

Colour: The Whiter, The Rarer

Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colourless diamonds are the rarest and most valuable.

Carat: Size Matters

Carat refers to the diamond’s weight, not its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable.
